A durable agent is one that survives production.

It keeps its state through failure and resumes where it stopped. It can wait days for a person and carry on. It records every decision in a form you can hand to an auditor. It lets you change the model without rebuilding the workflow. It works alongside other agents without corrupting what they share. Those are the five properties. An agent has them or it does not.

  1. Recoverable
  2. Resumable
  3. Auditable
  4. Replaceable
  5. Coordinated
The five properties of a durable agent, in order: recoverable, resumable, auditable, replaceable, coordinated.

Pilot to production

  • 78%have agent pilots running
  • 14%have reached production scale

Of the five gaps those leaders named most often, one is about the model. The other four are about the system around it.

Each mark is one enterprise in a hundred. 650 enterprise technology leaders, February and March 2026.1

Every durable execution vendor now ships something called a durable agent. What they mean is that the process survives a crash and picks up where it stopped. That is two of the five properties, done properly. This site is about all five.

Written for the CTOs, VPs of Engineering and architects who have been handed an agent project and need it to work.

The five properties

  1. 01

    Recoverable

Survives infrastructure failure and resumes from exactly where it stopped. No lost work.

  2. 02

    Resumable

Pauses mid-workflow, waits as long as it has to, and resumes without losing context.

  3. 03

    Auditable

Produces a decision record, not just an execution log. What went in, what was decided, who intervened, what came out.

  4. 04

    Replaceable

The model can be swapped without rebuilding the workflow. The orchestration is durable. The model is a component.

  5. 05

    Coordinated

Works with other agents and systems without race conditions, deadlocks or corrupted state.

What this site is

A definition, a test and a reference. Nothing to sign up for. The landscape page is dated and corrected. The score page stores nothing. The definition is the book’s, it is versioned, and it is testable: if your agent has the five properties, it is durable. If it does not, it is fragile.

“The model is not your moat. The agent is not your moat. The orchestration that makes them durable is your moat.”
— Venkat Chitturi, Durable Agents
